Candles can enhance any space in your home, but sometimes they don’t burn as expected. Whether it’s frosting, tunneling, or uneven burns, small issues can affect both the look and performance of your candle. When you decide to burn your De Rosa Candle, here’s how to deal with some of the most common problems you may face.

Soy Wax Frosting

Frosting appears as a white, chalky coating on the surface of soy wax candles. It’s a natural characteristic of soy wax as it crystallizes over time. Because we use a blend of 50% soy wax, you will see some frosting on your De Rosa Candles. We use 50% soy wax because soy wax is better at retaining fragrance oils than beeswax.

Frosting is purely cosmetic and doesn’t affect how your candle burns, but If you want to minimize it, try these steps:

  • Store candles in a cool, consistent environment.

  • Lightly rub the frosted area with a warm finger to remove the chalky layer

  • Burn your candle!

Tunneling

Tunneling is when a candle burns straight down the middle, leaving wax on the sides instead of melting evenly. As the wax directly under the wick continues to melt faster than the wax around it, a tunnel is created and the wick will eventually be extinguished by the liquid wax. To limit tunneling, follow the below tips.

  • The first burn is crucial. Make sure you burn your candle long enough for the melted wax pool to reach the edges of the candle (usually 2 hours). This helps create the wax “memory.” After you burn a candle, the wax takes a long time to fully harden to the level of the rest of the candle. When you burn it again, this softer wax will melt quicker than the surrounding wax, worsening the tunneling effect.

  • If tunneling has already started, carefully pour out the excess wax around the wick. Then try wrapping the top with aluminum foil (leaving an opening in the center) and letting it burn to even out the wax pool. This process may need to be completed a few times to get your candle back to optimal burning condition. (WE SHOULD TEST THIS LOL)

Uneven Sculpture Candle Burns

Uneven burning can lead to one side melting faster than the other, making the candle burn improperly. This can happen more frequently with sculpture candles compared to jar candles since they are different shapes. Flames burn with a circular radius. Our sculpture candles are rectangular. This means the flame will not always reach the outside corners of your candle even though the wick is the right size for the width of the candle. We experimented with many different wick sizes and materials to find the best wick for our candles. Larger wicks caused the candle to burn very quickly, while smaller wicks led to tunneling. We chose the wick we use today as they allow the candle to burn the most consistently while melting all the way to the sides of the rectangular shape of our candles. To ensure your sculpture candles burns the best it can, follow the below tips:

  • Keep wicks trimmed to about 1/4 inch. Long wicks create a large flame that can produce excess soot and tunneling.

  • Avoid placing candles near drafts, fans, or air vents, which can cause one side to burn faster.

Sculptural Candle Challenges

The primary function of sculptural candles is to visually elevate a space with a piece of art that smells amazing. We have designed our candles to not just look great, but also to burn great. However, they can present some unique challenges when burned compared to jar candles.

Dripping Wax

  • Place sculptural candles on a heat-resistant plate to catch excess wax. If you don’t have a candle tray, try using a small dinner plate. Our organic wax blend breaks off most non-porous surfaces when completely dry.

  • When only an inch of your wick remains, it is time to extinguish your candle as the remaining wax holding the wick up will become increasingly soft.

Responsible Sculpture Candle Burning

By following these simple steps, you can enjoy your candles longer and keep them burning beautifully and safely.
