The Art of Creating De Rosa Mexican Sculpture Candles

At De Rosa Candles, our passion lies in creating pieces that look amazing in your home and tell a story. Every candle we make is a blend of artistry and modern artisanal craft. Our hand-drawn Talavera design was inspired by traditional Mexican pottery from Puebla, Mexico. Our candles are named after owner Denise's mom, Graciela, whose nickname is Chela.

Check out this step-by-step on how we bring these unique candles to life.

The Idea Behind the Candle Designs

Our idea began when we moved to San José del Cabo, Mexico. We were inspired by the local Mexican culture but had a hard time finding home decor with a neutral, earthy aesthetic. We realized there was a gap in the market. While the traditional colorful designs are beautiful, we wanted something that resonated with our home decor style.

So, we dreamt up the perfect Talavera candle design—a blend of Mexican inspiration and contemporary design. We started with hand-drawn sketches while playing around with shapes, designs, and styles. Then, we tested different color combinations and chose our signature terracotta with a white design, white with a blue design, and neutral white on white.

From Candle Prototype to Perfection

With our hand-drawn design in mind, we invested in a 3D printer and began to learn how to print. Learning to 3D print was a challenge, but it allowed us to create prototypes we could test and refine in-house after testing multiple prototypes and adjusting to depth, size, and design detail. It took a handful of prototypes to land on the perfect candle size.

The next step was learning the art of mold-making. We experimented with various materials, testing durability and flexibility, until we found the perfect fit for our unique designs. The issue we encountered was finding a silicone that was firm enough that the sides wouldn't warp but not too firm that the design pieces would break when demolding.

Perfecting Mexican Sculpture Candles

Testing became our life. We made over one hundred candles and refined them as we experimented with different wax blends, wick sizes, scents, and color combinations. Through this process, we achieved the ideal burn quality and material composition, ensuring our candles are as functional as they are beautiful. The color of our candles sometimes varies slightly because we make them in small batches to ensure each candle gets our full care and attention.

To honor the cultural roots of our designs, we source materials locally in Mexico. From the wax to the fragrances, every component reflects our appreciation for la cultura.

The Beauty of Natural Imperfection

Over time, you might notice a frosted appearance on your candle. This natural occurrence, common in soy wax candles, is simply the wax attempting to return to its natural state. If this happens, gently rub the surface with your finger, and the candle will return to its normal state.

Made with Love

From drawing to completion, each De Rosa Candle represents our dedication to quality and culture. By combining traditional Mexican design with modern techniques, we’ve created candles that aren’t just decor, but meaningful pieces that connect you to a story.
