Candle Care Tips: How to Care for Your Mexican Sculpture Talavera Candles
Candles do more than just smell good; they create ambiance and elevate the look of your home. Proper care is essential to ensure you get the best experience from your candles. Here are our top De Rosa Candle care tips to help you enjoy every moment safely and maximize your candle's lifespan.
1. Keep Candles Out of Direct Sunlight
Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause your candle's color to fade. Additionally, the heat can cause the wax to soften or sweat. Store your candle in a cool, shaded area away from windows and other heat sources to preserve its appearance and performance.
2. Embrace Frosting and Know How to Handle It
Frosting is a natural process that occurs with soy wax over time. While it's harmless and a hallmark of natural wax, it creates a frosty finish on the surface of the candle. Frosting won't affect the candle's performance or scent, but if frosting bothers you, simply rub the surface gently with a warm finger to smooth it out.
3. Trim Your Wick to 1/4" Before Each Burn
As your candle burns, sometimes the wick and wax get used at different rates depending on the conditions where you are using the candle. Before lighting your candle, use scissors or a wick trimmer to cut the wick to about 1/4 inch. A properly trimmed wick ensures a clean, even burn and prevents excessive soot and smoke. A shorter wick creates a steady flame and reduces the risk of the wick mushrooming or producing black smoke. Don't cut the wick too short or it will drown as the wax melts and put itself out.
4. Burn Until the Melt Pool Reaches the Edges
For the first burn, it's important to let the wax melt across the entire candle surface, all the way to the edges. This process usually takes about 1.5 hours for De Rosa candles but varies on the size of the candle. Allowing a full melt pool prevents tunneling and wick drowning, which leads to reducing the candle's lifespan.
5. Use a Flame-Proof Tray for Safety
Burning your candle on a flame-proof tray or surface is a must. The tray catches any melted wax that may overflow and protects your furniture from heat damage. This step ensures your surfaces remain clean and your burn sessions stay worry-free. After the wax dries, it can be removed from the tray relatively easily. We've used plates before since the wax blend is organic, and the cleanup is easy.
6. Avoid Burning Candles in Drafty Areas
A strong draft can cause uneven burning, flickering flames, and excess soot. Place your candle in a stable, draft-free location to ensure the flame burns steadily and efficiently. Avoid areas near open windows, fans, or air conditioning vents.
7. Never Leave a Candle Unattended
Safety is always a priority when burning candles. Never leave a burning candle unattended, even for a short time. Make it a habit to extinguish your candle if you need to leave the house or go to sleep. This simple practice can prevent accidents and give you peace of mind.
8. Limit Burn Time to Two Hours
While it's tempting to let your candle burn for hours on end to enjoy the smell and vibes, it's best to limit each session to about two hours. Extended burns can cause the wick to overheat, leading to uneven burning and a shorter lifespan for your candle. Two hours is just enough time to enjoy its glow and fragrance while maintaining optimal performance.
9. Stop Burning When One Inch of Wax Remains
Once your candle has about an inch of wax left at the bottom, it's time to stop burning it. Burning past this point can cause the wick to fall over and pose a safety risk.
