The Candle-Making Process: Step-by-Step
Creating each De Rosa Candle is a detailed process that combines design and careful attention to detail. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at how we bring each candle to life:
1. Preparing the Molds
After each use, our molds are carefully cleaned to ensure they're ready for the next batch. This step is essential for maintaining the cleanliness of the designs we create.
2. Wax Heating
We melt our signature 50/50 blend of Mexican beeswax and soy wax in a large boiler. This wax combination ensures our candles retain maximum fragrance and can hold the Talavera design.
3. Wick Preparation
Wicks are cut from a large spool to fit each of our candle shapes. They are then waxed to remove any air bubbles to support a better burn. Afterward, the tips are trimmed to a sharp edge, making it easier to use the wicking tool.
4. Wicking the Molds
Using a custom tool, we carefully wick each candle by hand. We use one wick for our La Chelita candles, while La Chela has two, ensuring the best burn performance for each.
5. Detailing the Design
The detailed Talavera pattern in each mold is filled by hand using colored wax and pipettes. This step requires patience and precision to achieve the detailed designs our De Rosa Candles are known for.
6. Adding Scent
Once the molds have the wax design, are wicked, and the wax is melted to the correct temperature, we carefully blend the fragrance into the melted wax. We avoid over-mixing to prevent air bubbles to make sure we have a smooth and consistent finished wax.
7. Pouring the Wax
At the perfect temperature, the wax is poured into the molds. If poured too hot, the wax will melt the colored wax in the design portion of the mold. If poured too cold, the wax will dry unevenly. To ensure even cooling, we cover the molds with aluminum foil. This step helps prevent sinking in the wax caused by it cooling too quickly.
8. Demolding
Once the candles have fully cooled, they are gently removed from the molds. This step is always nerve-racking as too much force during removal can break off design pieces, but it's also exciting as it reveals each candle's final shape.
9. Final Touches
Each candle has any excess wax cut off with a razor knife. Wicks are trimmed to their perfect length, and each candle is inspected to ensure it meets our quality standards. Candles that don't pass our inspections are melted down and used to create new candles.
10. Packaging
Finally, the candles are wrapped in our custom tissue paper and honeycomb paper to keep them safe during transport and then placed into our custom De Rosa Candles boxes. The boxes are then labeled, barcoded, and stored in a cool, dry place. After you place your order, each candle is quickly prepared for sale and shipped directly to you.
